In 2006, ODOT replaced a pair of 3-span slab bridges (24'-30'-24') on State Route 40 (National Road), a divided 4-lane highway, with a single-cell 3-sided culvert CON/SPAN structure, as shown in photos below. The new structure has a 42' clear span. The left and right structures were integrated into one and safety grading was provided in the median. This design is being pioneered by District 6 and has been found to produce better short and long-term cost benefits to the state.
The design consultant, Columbus Engineering Consultants, Inc. (CEC), used the TAculvert software to generate the "first-draft" dawings, which amounted to more than 75% of the required final design details. The remaining details, mostly foundation piling and sheet piling, were prepared by manual CAD drafting. The use of TAculvert significantly reduced the plan preparation time and afforded CEC engineers ample time to perform thourough checking and review of the final plans. The construction was completed as scheduled and without mentionable errors.
